I Can’t Accept Not Trying: Michael Jordan on the Pursuit of Excellence Book Review

Michael Jordan: I cannot accept not trying

It is no well-kept secret that basketball great Michael Jordan has faced his fair share of naysayers over the years. From being cut from his high school basketball team, to the mounds of criticism Jordan faced over his foray into the realms of both pro baseball and pro golf, it seems like everyone knows the story of how Michael Jordan overcame the odds to become an athletic legend. Still, there is nothing like hearing the tale directly from its source.

Jordan’s book, “I Can’t Accept Not Trying: Michael Jordan on the Pursuit of Excellence”, is nothing short of moving for anyone attempting to follow their dreams down the road of accomplishment. There is no real secret to success, we all know that it takes hard-work and commitment, but when a man has achieved as much as Michael Jordan has in any field, it is worth a listen. The ensuing insight he provides is nothing short of inspirational. As one of the greatest athletes of all time, Michael Jordan proves through this book that the mind is the most important part of overcoming any trial. Be it a physical, mental, or spiritual journey, it is from the mind that we derive the discipline, foresight, and ability to accept sacrifice that Jordan deems necessary in order to achieve one’s goals. These are themes that are consistently explored in the book.

Athletes and intellectuals alike (and Jordan himself proves it possible to be both with this book) will find inspiration and information in the pages of this book. The book is short enough to be a quick and easy task for even the most casual of readers, and yet deep enough for the individual to be able to glean new information from its pages every time it is opened up. Talent alone is not enough to bridge the gap from street baller to hall of famer, it takes a special kind of strength to take one’s natural aptitudes to the next level and the greatest basketball player ever takes the time to let us know what lies in that space between. Whereas hard work alone may not guarantee you a spot at the top, you can be sure that you won’t even find yourself there without it.
